The Journey Begins
When we seek help, ultimately we are looking to nurture and meet our innermost needs, wants and desires. We may not realise this, especially as our challenges and problems might be of a very practical or physical nature. Maybe we have financial worries, an addiction, a health, sexual or identity concern. These things feel of the body and beyond, but these things are equally part of what makes us, us. Our inner selves process our outer experiences. Beyond this, our pasts inform our present and our futures; our childhood traumas, experiences, and development are what have shaped our adult selves and the way we look at the world and those around us.
What we may not realise, is that despite a lifetime of seeing the world in a certain way, we have it within us to make huge, transformative shifts in outlook and mindset, thus giving us a completely different experience, free of that which prevented us from getting past A (frustration and discontentment) in order to reach B (goal/contentment/freedom). When we analyse those feelings of stuck-ness, of being blocked, we usually uncover, to varying degrees, elements of shame, uncertainty, fear, resentment and not-good-enough-ness.
What we hate is what we fear, what we fear is that which we don’t understand, what we don’t understand is what brings us shame. In a nutshell, despite often knowing exactly what we want, should and could do in order to feel better (stop spending/overeating/taking heroin, ditch the job/relationship/anger, start writing/reading/learning/exercising/socialising; the list is infinite) – we simply cannot find it within ourselves to do so. So we label ourselves, at best, as a bit lazy, or ‘only human’, at worst as useless and a total failure and we resign ourselves to what is, or sink into a fug of ever increasing despair.
It is only when we are prepared to peel back the layers of how we got to where we are, can we alter that which no longer serves us, and therefore facilitate liberating ourselves for our next chapter. We are, regardless of our feelings of stasis, very much in flow, but for our flow to really bloom, we need to cut the tethers of old wounds.
Despite all this talk of past, trauma, childhood and mindset, we do this self-work very much in the present. A marvelous metaphor for this is: like driving a car, we may glance in the rear view mirror in order to understand what is behind us, and we certainly keep our eyes on what is coming up, and where we want to be; but our innermost and fullest attention is given to what is happening exactly now. Our work is very present, very intuitive, free flowing and adaptable. Often in the course of our sessions, we may be hit with realisations and ideas like lightning bolts. Other times, we may sense tiny seeds of change, which we nurture, cajole and develop over time, culminating in magnificent revelations or just a tangible sense of increased well-being as we move through our journey.
